Starting out as a content creator can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially considering the fact that you’ve seen so many content creators amass so much wealth and this gives you the confidence that there is so much money in content creation.
But as with every other career in life, there are so much challenges in content creation which is the reason why you should be conversant with the ways to get started before you set out as a content creator.
Now since this internet age has made it possible for us to gather information and learn about anything in no short time, I will try as much as possible to show you the 3 most important things you must do when starting out as a content creator.
But before we go into this article, I have a YouTube tutorial which I’ve discussed extensively on this topic, so if you are the kind who gets bored with reading, kindly watch the video below.
3 things you must do when starting out as a content creator.
The 3 things you must do when starting out as a content creator are:
- Choose a topic or niche.
- Be consistent.
- Exercise patience.
1. Choose a topic or niche.
The very first step to get started with content creation is to choose your topic or niche and my advice to this regard is to always choose a topic you are knowledgeable about.
To me, the best topic to settle for as a content creator is the topic that aligns with your profession or expertise, or a talent you have been able to develop. And the best part of it all is if you have much experience already.
Now, when you are creating content on a topic you already know so much about, it will be easy for you to come up with content ideas, and also finish up the content in a short period of time.
On the flip side, if you are creating content on a topic you know nothing about, it will compel you to spend time researching and studying hard before you are even able to come up with any content.
It is also worth noting that so many of us have more than one profession or expertise, an example is myself because I am an experienced cinematographer and photographer, musician, record producer, web designer, farmer etc.
So in this case, all you need to do is pick one of the professions to start with and create at least 10 to 20 content to establish authority on that topic. Do the same with the remaining content, and after having much content on each respective profession, you can then go ahead to create content at random on any of them.
Another important thing to note is that you can use one social account or page for all your content and organize them into albums or playlists to help the algorithm understand your account.
2. Be consistent.
Consistency is very important when starting out as a content creator because it will help you to immediately establish authority on any topic you choose.
When people, or even the algorithm recognize that you have created so many content on a particular topic, it will believe that you know so much about that topic and in so doing will start to recommend them for those who are pursuing the same interest on the platforms to engage with.
Do not allow anyone to deceive you that dishing out articles is not important to grow as a content creator because you can never tell which of your articles will trend and give you that visibility to go viral and become successful.
3. Exercise patience.
This is the part where most content creators will never dare to tell you, instead they will brainwash you to believe that content creation is a very easy task or the road to success in it is very smooth.
And I believe they do this in order to keep you watching and engaging in their content, because I believe human beings hate to hear the negative side of success, thus, if you tell them the challenges involved in any venture in life they will immediately paint you as not wanting them to become successful and automatically stop engaging wth your content.
But at whatever detriment I will boldly tell you the truth that the road to success in content creation is never smoot and will never be.
Now et me share my simple experience with you.
I started my content creation journey in 2020 as a blogger, and before 2022 I wa s able to successfully monetize 2 blogs with Google AdSense and it was generating so much revenue for me.
But one morning I woke up to realize that there was no traffic coming to my blog again and my Google AdSense revenue had stopped drastically.
As a web designer, I ran every test on the back end to see what the problem was but there was none, and so I began to do a research online and it was then I discovered that Google had rolled out their algorithm update and my blogs were affected because it didn’t stick to their rules.
The main problem was that I was blogging about different topics like news, quotes, music industry, business etc. In fact I mixed all this topics up in one blog.
his was working then because Google were rewarding blogs based on how many keywords they had, but the new algorithm changed everything and began to reward blogs that were sticking to a particular niche and had lots of articles around closely-related topics.
Now the mistake I did was to delete all the articles in the blog and start all over again, instead of writing more articles to support each of the niches I was blogging on.
It took 2 years for me to start getting the traffic I was expecting to my blog again because I entered into farming which was not giving me enough time to write more articles.
Now, you can see why patience is necessary because if I was not patient I would have given up on blogging and you wouldn’t be reading this article from me now to learn.
So I urge you to exercise patience as a content creator so you can withstand any challenges that will come along the line and still forge ahead to success.
I’ve known so many content creators who grew their social media accounts to thousands of followers and lost it because of one violation or another.
Those who were not patient could not get back up again till today.
